Smoking equipment. The custom of smoking began at the beginning of the Edo period, but the custom of each person carrying a tobacco pouch to take a puff seems to have come much later, and this portable pouch developed as the number of smokers increased. There are many pictures of tobacco trays in paintings from the Genroku period (1688-1704), but there are still few pictures of tobacco pouches. At that time, tobacco pouches were often made of paper, such as hosho paper or oil paper, as there was a fear that the tobacco would become soggy. The most common shape was a folding basket shape made of paper folded in half, or a later type of sleeve-drop purse folded in thirds. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
