Anawrahta - Anawrahta (English spelling)
1014‐77
The de facto founder of Myanmar's first unified state, the Pagan dynasty. Born into a ruling family that had ruled the Pagan region since the mid-9th century, he defeated his brother-in-law Souk Kathe, who had usurped his father Khun Soe Chaung Byu, and secured his position as ruler in 1044. His territory was initially limited to the middle reaches of the Irrawaddy River, but he gradually brought the surrounding areas under his control and achieved political unification, while at the same time developing an irrigation network using the rivers in the Chau Se region and the lakes and marshes in the Meiktila region, and working to strengthen his country. In 1857, he attacked Thaton, the capital of Sudhammawaddy, a Mon nation in southern Myanmar, and took 30,000 Mon prisoners, including King Manuha, to central Myanmar.
