German psychiatrist. Born in Neustrelitz, Mecklenburg. He received his medical doctorate from the University of Leipzig, and taught at the University of Munich, the University of Leipzig, the University of Heidelberg, and other universities. He had a great respect for his teacher, W. Bundt, and introduced psychological association experiments into psychiatry. He also systematically classified mental illnesses, dividing them into two categories: dementia praecox (later the name schizophrenia was proposed by the Swiss Bleuler) and manic depression, and believed that the cause of mental illness was organic and that its course could be predicted. He also developed a performance test, which became the basis for the Japanese Uchida-Kraepelin Mental Performance Test (Kraepelin Test). He is sometimes called the "father of modern psychiatry." His main work is "Outlines of Psychiatry" (1883). [Utsugi Tamotsu] [References] | | | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
