Emil Kraepelin

German psychiatrist. Born in Neustrelitz, Mecklenburg. He received his medical doctorate from the University of Leipzig, and taught at the University of Munich, the University of Leipzig, the University of Heidelberg, and other universities. He had a great respect for his teacher, W. Bundt, and introduced psychological association experiments into psychiatry. He also systematically classified mental illnesses, dividing them into two categories: dementia praecox (later the name schizophrenia was proposed by the Swiss Bleuler) and manic depression, and believed that the cause of mental illness was organic and that its course could be predicted. He also developed a performance test, which became the basis for the Japanese Uchida-Kraepelin Mental Performance Test (Kraepelin Test). He is sometimes called the "father of modern psychiatry." His main work is "Outlines of Psychiatry" (1883).

ドイツの精神医学者。メクレンブルクのノイストレリッツに生まれる。ライプツィヒ大学で医学博士の学位をとり、ミュンヘン大学、ライプツィヒ大学、ハイデルベルク大学などで教えた。師のW・ブントを非常に尊敬し、心理学の連想実験を精神医学に取り入れた。また精神病の体系的分類を行い、早発性痴呆(ちほう)（後にスイスのブロイラーがスキゾフレニア（統合失調症）という名称を提唱）とそううつ病とに2大別するとともに、精神病の原因は器質的なものでその経過を予測することができると考えた。作業検査の開発者でもあり、それが日本の内田クレペリン精神作業検査（クレペリン検査）のもとになった。「現代精神医学の父」とよばれることがある。主著に『精神医学綱要』（1883）がある。
