This is a tale of a transformation contest that has spread around the world. In Grimm's Fairy Tales, it corresponds to volume 68. A son becomes an apprentice to a wizard. When his father comes to pick him up in a year, he promises that if he can identify his transformed son, he will pay him no tuition fees, but if he cannot, he will receive a large reward. With the help of a dwarf, the father just barely manages to identify the son, and the two escape from the wizard. Along the way, the son transforms into animals, which the father sells and the son makes money by running away. At the market, the son tells his father to take off the reins before selling him, but the father accidentally sells him to the wizard with the reins still on.

世界的分布をもつ変身競争譚。《グリム童話集》では68巻がこれに相当する。息子が魔法使いに弟子入りする。1年たって父親が迎えに来たときに，変身した息子をそれと識別できれば授業料はただ，できなければ多額の謝礼を出すという約束をする。父親は小人の援助でかろうじて識別し，魔法使いのもとから2人で逃げる。途中，息子は動物に変身し，父が売っては息子が逃げ帰ることによって金を稼ぐ。市場で息子が，父に手綱を外して売るよう言って馬に変身すると，父はうっかり手綱をつけたまま魔法使いに売る。
