Return to the Palace of the Genkyo

...Chinese poet from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. His pen name was Xuangong. His great-grandfather was the writer Gui Youguang. When the Qing dynasty's army began to take control of Jiangnan in 1645, Gui Zhuang, along with his close friend Gu Yanwu and others, rose up in the resistance in his hometown of Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. The tragic situation after the fall of the city is also directly reflected in his poems. In the lyrics of "Manko no Shukyoku," he expresses his resentment towards the civil servants who had surrendered and pandered to him, and his determination to live as a civilian, but in fact he spent the latter half of his life as a so-called Ming remnant.
