… The development of Greek studies, which became the basis for the flourishing of humanitas studies, was remarkable throughout the 15th century, and the world situation at the time had a great influence on this. That is, Greeks continued to migrate to Western Europe from Constantinople (now Istanbul), which was on the verge of collapse due to the oppression of the Ottoman Empire. In particular, the arrival of leading scholars such as Plethon, Bessarion, and Iōannēs Argyropoulos (1410-90) at the Council of East and West (Council of Ferrara and Florence) held in 1438-39 provided a great stimulus to Italian Greek studies. Greek language studies, which had already begun, were combined with the collection of Greek classics promoted by Niccolo Niccoli (1364-1437) and others, and translations of Greek classics were carried out one after another. The participation of outstanding Greek scholars led to the development of both quality and quantity of Greek studies. …
