A general term for the genus Phlox in the family Polemoniaceae (APG classification: Polemoniaceae). Annual or perennial herbs. Most species are cold-hardy, but some are semi-cold-hardy. The leaves are entire and opposite, but may be alternate at the top. The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils or clustered at the stem apex, forming cymes or panicles. Flower colors include scarlet, blue, pink, and white, and the sepals are elongated, bell-shaped with five lobes at the tip. There are about 50 species in North America and one species in Siberia. Many species are known, from creeping to erect dwarf species, including the tall perennial Eiransou ( P. paniculata L.), the annual P. drummondii Hook., and the Moss Phlox ( P. subulata L.), which is often used in rock gardens and other gardens. They are also used in flower beds, potted plants, and as cut flowers. Eiransou is also called oleander, and was named after the fact that the scent of its flowers resembles the powder of a courtesan. Native to North America, it is said to have been introduced to Japan in the early Taisho period. It grows to a height of 1 meter and blooms from June to September. Although it is intended for planting in gardens, it has recently been attracting attention as a cut flower and as a potted plant that can be used as a dwarfing agent, and many wonderful horticultural varieties have been produced. There are said to be nearly 300 varieties, which are cold-resistant and easy to grow. Dianthus campanulatus is native to Texas in North America and grows to a height of 15 to 50 centimeters. There are also several varieties for use in rock gardens. They are easy to cultivate, and should be grown in a sunny location with good drainage and ventilation, with lime applied (limestone is preferred). Plant in spring or autumn with 40cm between plants and do not need to be replanted for 3-4 years. They can be propagated by division (April), cuttings (May) or from seed. In warm areas, Dianthus campanulatus should be sown in mid-September and planted with 20cm between plants in mid-October, while in cold areas the seedbed should be protected from the cold and planted in mid-March. In particularly cold areas, sowing from March to April is best. [Uoman Eiichi March 22, 2021] [Reference] |The stems are upright and the leaves are oblong-lanceolate.
