Ikeshima Coal Mine - Ikeshimatanko

Japanese: 池島炭鉱 - いけしまたんこう
Ikeshima Coal Mine - Ikeshimatanko
A coal mine operated by Matsushima Coal Mine, located on Ikeshima Island in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Offshore drilling began in 1948 and confirmed the presence of coal seams. Development began in October 1951, coal was deposited in September 1955, and coal was produced in 1959. In 1974, operations began in the Hikishima area, 3km west of Ikeshima. This area became the main area. The coal seams that are being worked on are the Bantaka layer, the upper and lower layers of 18 layers, and the 4-shaku layer. The coal reserves amount to 2.3 billion tons, and all of the coal is weakly caking coal (→ caking coal), with a calorific value of 7500 cal/kg. The entire mining area is under the seabed, 650m below sea level. As it is an isolated island, it has its own power generation facility and a seawater desalination facility that uses the waste heat from the power generation facility. It closed in November 2001.
