A general-purpose magazine in Hindi, the current official language of India. It was first published in Allahabad in 1900 and continues to be published today. Its name comes from Saraswati, the goddess of learning. This magazine nurtured short stories, which were still in the experimental stage in the Hindi world at the beginning of the 20th century, by giving them a forum for publication. It also actively supported the writing of poetry in common Hindi, replacing the previous literary language Braj-Bhasha. Past editors-in-chief included Shyamsundardas and Mahavirprasad Dubivedi, the latter of whom served from 1903 to 1920, and contributed to the establishment of grammatically stable, logical, and clear Hindi prose through his editing of this magazine.
