A building with walls made of stacked concrete blocks and reinforced with steel bars, concrete, and mortar. In Japan, buildings made only of stacked blocks are not permitted; steel bars must be used. The number of floors a building can have is limited depending on the strength of the blocks, with a maximum of three floors, and because it requires load-bearing walls, it is not suitable for large or open buildings. However, it has many advantages, such as excellent fire resistance and durability, good insulation performance, easy construction, and lower construction costs than concrete, making it suitable for small buildings such as homes and warehouses, and it has become popular rapidly since machines for mass-production of concrete blocks were imported in 1950.

コンクリートブロックを積上げ，鉄筋とコンクリートやモルタルで補強した壁をもつ建物。日本ではブロックだけを積上げた建物は許可されず，必ず鉄筋を通さなければならない。ブロックの強度によって建物の階数制限があり，最高は3階までで，しかも耐力壁を必要とするので大建築や開放的な建物には向かない。しかし耐火・耐久力にすぐれ，断熱性能がよく，施工が簡単で，建設費がコンクリートよりも安いなどの利点が多く，住宅や倉庫など小規模の建物には適応しており，1950年コンクリートブロックの大量生産用機械が輸入されて以来，急速に普及した。
