Australia's largest integrated steel manufacturer. It also engages in resource development such as oil and nickel, shipbuilding, and shipping. Abbreviated as BHP. Headquartered in Melbourne. Founded in 1885 with the aim of mining silver, lead, and zinc ore discovered in Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1883. In 1997, it discovered high-grade iron ore deposits in southern Australia, and began steel production in 1915. In 1941, it entered the shipbuilding industry, discovered a commercially viable natural gas field in 1965, and discovered an oil field in Bass Strait in 1967 in a joint venture with Exxon and others.

オーストラリア最大の総合鉄鋼メーカー。石油，ニッケルなどの資源開発，造船，海運などの事業も行っている。略称BHP。本社メルボルン。1883年にニュー･サウス･ウェールズ州のブロークン･ヒルで発見された銀，鉛，亜鉛鉱の採掘を目的として85年に設立された。97年には南部オーストラリアで高品位の鉄鉱床を発見，1915年から鉄鋼生産を開始。41年には造船業に進出，65年には商業ベースに乗る天然ガス田を発見，67年にはエクソン社などと合弁でバス海峡で油田を発見している。
