Holding company of France's largest chemical industry group. Headquartered in Paris. It began as a small pharmacy founded in Lyon in 1858 by Étienne Poulenc to manufacture chemicals. In 1895, it merged with a similar company in Lyon to form Société Chimique des Usines du Rhône, which produced dyes, pharmaceuticals, etc. In 1910, it withdrew from dyes and entered the plastics sector, and in 1928 merged with Établissements Poulenc Frères to form Société des Usines Chimique Rhône‐Poulenc, headquartered in Paris.
