Earl of Egmont

A nobleman of the Netherlands. He served under Charles V and Philip II and achieved many military feats, and in 1559 was appointed governor of Flanders and Artois. He allied with the Duke of Orange and Count of Holland against the tyranny of Granvelle, a confidant of King Philip of Spain, and in 64 expelled Granvelle. In 65, he represented the Council of State and sent an envoy to Spain to convey the wishes of the nobles to the king. After the rebellious movement by the lower nobles and Calvinist citizens intensified in 66, he continued to show allegiance to the king, but was captured by the Duke of Alba in 67 and executed the following year.

ネーデルラントの大貴族。カール5世，フェリペ2世に仕えて数々の武勲を立て，1559年フランドル，アルトア両州総督に補された。スペイン王フェリペの腹心グランベルの専制に抗してオランイェ公，ホールネ伯らと同盟，64年グランベルを退去させ，65年国務評議会を代表してスペインに使いし，大貴族の意向を王に伝えた。66年下級貴族やカルバン派市民による反抗運動が激化してからは，ひたすら王に恭順の意を表していたが，67年アルバ公の手で捕らえられ，翌年処刑された。
