Broken Hill

Japanese: ブロークン･ヒル（英語表記）Broken Hill

A mining city in the western part of New South Wales, in the southeast of Australia. Population 23,000 (1991). Home to some of the country's largest non-ferrous metal mines, lead, zinc and silver ores are extracted and transported by rail to Port Pirie and Newcastle. Lead and zinc production accounts for about 60% of the national total. It is also known for the strong influence of the miners' union in the running of the city. Ore deposits were discovered in 1883, and the city was incorporated in 1907. The name is an English translation of an indigenous place name. [Taniuchi Tatsu]

There is a mineralized zone several tens of meters wide in the Precambrian strata of gneiss, crystalline schist, and amphibolite, and numerous lenticular ore bodies are intermittent over a length of 5 km.

　先カンブリア時代の片麻岩，結晶片岩，角セン岩などの地層中に幅数十mの鉱化帯があり，多数のレンズ状の鉱体が延長5kmにわたって断続する。
