...It is said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi once threw gold into the well called Kinmeisui in the Osaka Castle tower to predict the fate of the Toyotomi clan, or to have prayed for Hideyoshi's personal longevity. The Kobo Well, a representative example of a Japanese legend, is a miracle story in which holy water gushed forth when Kobo Daishi struck the well with his walking stick, and Ubagai Well is accompanied by a legend of a wet nurse who accidentally killed her child and drowned herself in it. Both of these are traces of folk religious figures such as hijiri (saints) and shrine maidens using the holy springs for rituals. ...
