Austrian pianist. He received his musical education in Zagreb and Graz. He later studied under Edwin Fischer in Lucerne, who greatly influenced him. In 1949, he won a prize at the Busoni International Competition, and began performing in Vienna. He was initially known as a Liszt player, but he had a wide repertoire ranging from Bach to Schoenberg, and made a name for himself with his interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. He moved to London in the late 1960s, and became even more active. He first visited Japan in 1971 (Showa 46). An intellectual performer, he holds an honorary doctorate in music from the University of London. He is one of the most representative pianists of the second half of the 20th century. His books include Musical Thoughts and Afterthoughts (1977, translated into Japanese as Rakusou no Hitotoki) and Music Sounded Out: Essays, Lectures, Interviews, Afterthoughts (1991, translated into Japanese as Ongaku no Naka no Kotoba).
