Black rhinoceros beetle (English name: Pachyrrhynchus infernalis)

Japanese: クロカタゾウムシ（英語表記）Pachyrrhynchus infernalis

An insect of the Curculionidae family in the Coleoptera order. It is black and shiny with long thoracic legs. The elytra have a row of small dots. The body length is about 13 mm. It is found in the Yaeyama Islands and feeds on the leaves of trees such as Castanopsis cuspidata, but is said to be more common on Kanko trees. The larvae bore holes into dead wood. The main distribution of the Pachyrrhynchus weevils is New Guinea and the Philippines, and there are about 420 known species. The Yaeyama Islands are the northern limit of the distribution of the weevils. As their name suggests, the weevils have extremely tough bodies and many have beautiful markings.
