The world's first container shipping company, headquartered in the United States. Sea-land's history began in 1955 when McLean Industries Inc. acquired Waterman Steamship Co. and converted many old tankers into container ships, and in the following year, 1956, began transporting containers from the Port of Newark to the Port of Houston. In 1958, the company opened a route to Puerto Rico, advancing into foreign routes. In 1961, McLean Industries Inc. established Sea-land, Inc., and decided to provide container transport services under the name Sea-land.
