Sea-Land Service Inc.

Japanese: シーランド[会社]（英語表記）Sea‐Land Service Inc.

The world's first container shipping company, headquartered in the United States. Sea-land's history began in 1955 when McLean Industries Inc. acquired Waterman Steamship Co. and converted many old tankers into container ships, and in the following year, 1956, began transporting containers from the Port of Newark to the Port of Houston. In 1958, the company opened a route to Puerto Rico, advancing into foreign routes. In 1961, McLean Industries Inc. established Sea-land, Inc., and decided to provide container transport services under the name Sea-land.

アメリカ合衆国に本社を置く世界最初のコンテナー海運会社。シーランドの歴史は，1955年McLean Industries Inc.がWaterman Steamship Co.を買収して多数の老朽タンカーをコンテナー船に改造，翌56年ニューアーク港からヒューストン港へコンテナー輸送を行った時点にはじまる。58年プエルト･リコ航路を開設し，外国航路へ進出した。61年McLean Industries Inc.はシーランド社を設立し，コンテナー輸送サービスはシーランドの名で行うことにした。
