Granada (English spelling)

Japanese: グラナダ(英語表記)Granada
Granada (English spelling)
Ancient name: Illiberis. Capital of Granada province, Andalusia, southern Spain. Located on the northwestern slope of the Nevada mountain range, at an altitude of 685m. Prospered as the capital of the Moorish Kingdom of Granada from 1238 to 1492. The name is said to be derived from the pomegranate trees (Granada in Spanish) that grow in abundance in the area. It overlooks the fertile Granada plain to the west and is bounded to the south by the rapids of the Genil River. In addition to being a bustling distribution center for agricultural products from the Granada plain, the city also produces liqueurs, soap, paper, textiles, etc. Many historical buildings remain, including Granada Cathedral (16th to 18th centuries), famous for its many paintings and sculptures, the tombs of Ferdinand II and Isabella I, the founders of unified Spain, a monastery built in the 16th century, and the University of Granada. The famous Alhambra Palace, the Generalife Palace built in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the Albaicin district were registered as cultural heritage of the World in 1984. Population: 254,034 (estimated 1991).

Granada

A city in southwestern Nicaragua. Capital of the department of the same name. It is located about 40 km east-southeast of the capital Managua, on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua, overlooking Mombacho Volcano to the south. Founded in 1523, it developed while competing with Leon to the northwest in politics and trade. Because it was a wealthy town, it was often attacked by pirates from the Caribbean in the 17th century. It is now one of the country's major cities and an industrial center, with industries such as furniture, soap, sewing, cottonseed oil, and rum. It is a typical Spanish-style town, and although the city center was burned down by American W. Walker in 1857, many old mansions and churches have been preserved and rebuilt. It is the terminus of the main railway line that runs from the capital to Corinto, the main port on the Pacific coast, and a road that branches off from the Pan-American Highway passes through it. It is also the departure and arrival point for ships on Lake Nicaragua. Population 88,636 (1985 estimate).
