...the name of a genus of flatworms in the family Planariidae of the order Tricladida of the class Turbellaria, or generally the name of a species in the family Planariidae. The Japanese planarian Dugesia japonica (illustration) was once classified as part of the Planaria genus, but was later transferred from the Planaria genus to the Dugesia genus after detailed examination of its reproductive organs, and therefore there are currently no species in the Planaria genus in Japan. All Planarians are freshwater creatures that live on the bottoms of rivers and ponds, or on aquatic plants and stones.

In the past, they were classified based only on the shape of the digestive organs, but recently they have been classified based on the structure of the nervous system, excretory system, and reproductive system. The planarian Dugesia japonica lives under stones in clean ponds and streams, and because of its strong regenerative powers, it has been used as a material for experimental morphology. The planarian Notoplana humilus and many other species are found under stones in the intertidal zone.
