An old city in central Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The southwestern part is the rice paddy region of the Tsukushi Plain, while the rest is mountainous. It is served by the Amagi Railway, Nishitetsu Amagi Line, and the Oita Expressway. The city center was so prosperous that it was called Amagi Senken as a post town and market town, and during wartime it was a military city with Tachiarai Airfield to the south. Major beer and tire factories are located here, and the city is currently developing an industrial complex and attracting businesses. Persimmons and kudzu are its specialties. The Hiratsuka Kawazoe ruins and the remains of Akizuki Castle are located here. In March 2006, it was merged with Haki Town and Asakura Town in Asakura County to become a city, forming Asakura City. 福岡県中部の旧市。1954年市制。南西部は筑紫(つくし)平野の水田地帯で,他は山地。甘木鉄道,西鉄甘木線,大分自動車道が通じる。中心市街は宿場町・市場町として甘木千軒と呼ばれるほど繁栄,戦時中は南隣に太刀洗(たちあらい)飛行場をもつ軍都でもあった。大手のビール,タイヤ工場などが立地し,さらに工業団地造成,企業誘致が進む。柿,クズを特産。平塚川添遺跡,秋月城跡がある。2006年3月,朝倉郡杷木町,朝倉町と合併し市制,朝倉市となる。167.19km2。4万3272人(2003)。
