Born December 25, 1887 in San Antonio, New Mexico
[Died] January 3, 1979. Santa Monica, California. Founder of the world's largest hotel chain. After graduating from the School of Mines, he joined his father's hotel and general store, which catered to peddlers. After his father's death, he aggressively expanded the business, acquiring hotels mainly in Texas, and then expanding into California, Chicago, and New York. In 1946, he established Hilton Hotels, Inc., and aggressively expanded the hotel chain not only domestically but also overseas, and by the early 1990s, there were approximately 250 hotels bearing the Hilton name around the world.

[Died] December 20, 1954, Long Beach, California. British novelist. Studied at Cambridge University. He gained recognition with Lost Horizon (1933), set in the utopia of Shangri-La, and Goodbye and Mr. Chips (1934), both of which were made into films. His other works include Knight Without Armour (1933) and Random Harvest (1941).
