This hilly region occupies part of the Dewa Mountains in southern Akita Prefecture. It is bounded to the north and east by the Omono River valley, to the south by the Koyoshi River fault cliff, and to the west by the Sea of Japan. The Himegamiyama fault cliff is at the eastern foot of the mountain, and the Daikokumori fault cliff is at the south, forming a border with the Yokote Basin. The hills are divided into north and south by the Ishizawa River, a tributary of the Koyoshi River, and in the north there are mountains of 300 to 600 meters such as Sasamoriyama (595 meters), and eroded valleys have developed. Rice paddies have been developed in the valley bottoms in a dendritic pattern, and small-scale rice farming is carried out. Most of the hills are forested, and the amount of snowfall is high. The area has a continuing population outflow, making it one of the least densely populated areas in Akita Prefecture. In recent years, oil field exploration has been carried out, and beef and dairy cattle have been raised.
