...It is distributed from off the coast of Choshi to Sagami Bay, the Izu Islands, and off the coast of Shima Daiozaki, and lives on rocky bottoms at depths of 50 to 200 meters. It was first illustrated by Musashi Sekiju in Mokuhachifu in 1844 (Kouka 1), and given the name Okinaebisu as an advanced form of the Ebisugai. In 1875, Hilgendorf FM Hilgendorf (1839-1904), a teacher of zoology and botany at Tokyo Medical School (now the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo), discovered it in a souvenir shop on Enoshima Island, and announced it to the academic world in 1877 after returning to Germany. This rare primitive species became famous for being found in Japan, and the British Museum in the UK requested the University of Tokyo to collect it, wanting to purchase one for $100. ...
