Aesop (English spelling)
[raw]?
[died] c. 564 BC. A legendary Greek fable writer. Greek name Aisōpos. He is said to have been a slave born in Phrygia. It is said that there was a collection of animal fables in prose named after Aesop, and in the 5th century BC, Aesop was generally considered to be the author of fables. Other fables were collected under his name after him, but the oldest surviving Greek collection of Aesop's fables is the one that Babrios changed to Iambas (→ Iambas) around 100, and the Latin version is slightly older, published in Iambas verse by Phaedrus in the first half of the 1st century. The latter was later rewritten in prose under the title Romulus. Jean de La Fontaine's Fables, based on Aesop's fables, is also famous. It was introduced to Japan by Jesuit missionaries in the 16th century, and was translated into Japanese style as the kana-zushi "Isoho Monogatari" in the early Edo period.
