The Ammonites were a nation that had been living on the east bank of the Jordan River, in the Jabbok River basin, northeast of the Dead Sea, since the end of the 15th century BCE. They fought against King David's Israel and were defeated. Solomon married an Ammonite woman, Naamah, and had his first son, Rehoboam. According to the tradition in Genesis, Chapter 19, the Ammonites were descendants of Ben-Ammi, the son of Abraham's nephew Lot and one of his daughters. They were conquered by Babylonia in 582 BCE. Their capital, Rabbat Ammon (today's Amman), was called Philadelphia during the Hellenistic period. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
