Shofukuji Temple

Japanese: 聖福寺 - しょうふくじ
Shofukuji Temple
A temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect in Fukuoka City. The principal image is the Bodhisattva Kannon. It is said to have been built by Eisai in the early Kamakura period. Due to its convenient location, it was the residence of famous monks such as Shoichi Kokushi and Rankei Doryu around the time of their entry into Song China. Many of the abbots were active in diplomacy with Ming China. The colored silk statue of Daikan Zenshi (from the Southern Song period in China) and the temple bell (built in 1528) are designated as Important Cultural Properties.
