Rudolf Karl Bultmann

Rudolf Karl Bultmann

German Protestant New Testament scholar. Born August 20th in Bieverstede, Oldenburg. After working as a private lecturer at the University of Marburg and a professor at the universities of Breslau and Giessen, he became a professor of New Testament at the University of Marburg in 1921. He started out with historical and critical research of the Bible, and wrote "History of the Tradition of the Synoptic Gospels" (1921) using a stylistic historical method of classifying the stylistic styles of the text. He participated in the early dialectical theology movement led by Barth and others, came into contact with Kierkegaard, and was also strongly influenced by the philosophy of Heidegger. He participated in the anti-Hitler Confessing Church movement together with Barth and others. Since "Jesus" and "The New Testament and Mythology" (both 1941), he has liberated the message of the Bible from the framework of ancient mythology and advocated demythologization, or an existential interpretation, in which it is interpreted in the context of the existence of modern people, causing a great stir in the academic world after the Second World War. Subsequently, new methods of biblical interpretation, such as tradition history and redaction history, were developed, centered around the University of Marburg, and the Bultmann School was formed.
