Conversations-lexikon (English)

…Furtier's dictionary is known to have been created in opposition to the French Dictionary created by the Académie Française. In the early 18th century, J. Harris' English encyclopedia (Lexicon Technicum, 1704) and the German I. Huebner's encyclopedic glossary (Realem Staats-, Zeitungs- und Conversationslexikon, 1704) appeared. The latter was the first of a type called Conversationslexikon (literally a conversation dictionary), and was compiled with the aim of providing the emerging middle class with the necessary education for social interactions, and this lineage would later lead to the Brockhaus Encyclopedia and others. …
