At the age of 17, he was adopted into the Matsubara family. He started out as a novelist, but on the recommendation of Koda Rohan, he joined the Kokumin Shimbun company in 1892 (Meiji 25). Influenced by Futabatei Shimei, he explored Tokyo's lower classes and published detailed reports on them in the Kokumin Shimbun. He added a new work to this, The Darkest Tokyo (1893), a masterpiece of documentary literature that is praised alongside Yokoyama Gennosuke's The Lower Classes of Japan. When the Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) began, he was dispatched as a war correspondent and sent correspondence from the battlefield.
