Mercurochrome - Mercurochrome (English spelling)

Mercurochrome - Mercurochrome (English spelling)

A bactericidal disinfectant, an organic mercury compound. It is in the form of lobules or granules, blue-green or greenish-reddish brown, odorless, and soluble in water; its aqueous solution is red and emits yellow-green fluorescence. A 2% aqueous solution is generally called mercurochrome solution, and is commonly known as "red chrome." It is applied to the skin and mucous membranes as a mild disinfectant without irritation. Mercury ions dissociate and exhibit a bactericidal effect, but the bactericidal effect is not very strong. In addition to disinfecting the skin and mucous membranes, it has also been used for disinfecting wounds, washing, and as an eye drop or eye wash. Its advantages are that it is non-irritating and does not corrode metals, but its disadvantage is that it is strongly colored. Because it is a mercury compound, pollution during production has become a problem, and it is no longer manufactured in Japan. The amount used has also drastically decreased. It should be avoided to use it together with tincture of iodine, as it will cause mercury precipitation.
