This method is used as a type of underground natural gas storage and secondary oil recovery method. When producing oil, gas dissolved in oil underground is separated at the temperature and pressure conditions at the surface. In most cases, the gas is ignited on-site and incinerated, unless a significant amount of the gas can be converted into cash. To eliminate this waste, the gas separated from the oil is injected into the gas cap at the top of the oil reservoir, which can reduce the pressure drop in the oil reservoir caused by oil production to some extent and can also be used as a source of large amounts of gas in the future. Sometimes large amounts of gas from another gas source are injected to reduce the pressure drop in the oil reservoir.

天然ガスの地下貯蔵と石油の2次回収法の一種として利用される方法。石油を生産する場合には，地下で石油に溶け込んでいたガスが地表の温度と圧力の状態では分離される。そのガス量が相当量まとまって換金可能な場合を除いて，ほとんどの場合はその場で火をつけて焼却している。このむだをなくすために，油層の上部のガスキャップの部分に石油から分離されたガスを圧入しておけば，石油の生産に伴う油層の圧力低下をある程度軽減させられると同時に，将来まとまったガス源として利用することができる。油層の圧力低下を軽減させる目的で，別のガス源からのガスを多量に圧入することもある。
