Assam earthquake

Japanese:
Assam earthquake

Earthquakes occur frequently in the Assam region of India. In neighboring China, they are called Xizang earthquakes (Tibetan earthquakes). Many earthquakes occur around the Himalayas, where the Indian and Asian continents collide. The epicenters are concentrated in the Himalayan mountain range and its two flanks, and along with deep earthquakes in the Hindu Kush on the western flank, huge earthquakes such as the earthquake on June 12, 1897 occur frequently in the Assam region on the eastern flank. It is said that during this earthquake, many large and small stones flew up without leaving any marks on the ground, and the acceleration associated with the earthquake is thought to have been so great that it exceeded the acceleration of gravity. The earthquake on August 15, 1950, with a magnitude of 8.6, was a major earthquake comparable to the Chilean earthquake of 1960 and the Alaskan earthquake of 1964, and shook an area of 3 million square kilometers not only in India and Tibet but also in neighboring countries. The epicenter was 50 kilometers deep, and roads, railways, bridges, buildings, etc. were destroyed, there were many landslides, and about 4,000 people were killed.
