Born November 14, 1765 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania [Died] February 24, 1815, New York American engineer. Born into a farming family, he was apprenticed to a jeweler. He initially aspired to be a painter, and was supported by his talent. In 1787, he went to London to continue his studies, but was unsuccessful. He then became interested in canal engineering, and wrote Treatise on the Improvement of Canal Navigation (1796). This was also not accepted. The following year, he went to Paris, where he studied submarines and torpedoes. In 1803, he built a prototype of a small paddle steamer, testing it on the Seine. In 1806, he returned to America, where he began improving and building steamships, completing the Clermont. In the summer of 1807, the ship successfully sailed up the Hudson River between New York and Albany. That autumn, he began the world's first regular steamship service. In 1814, he also succeeded in building the world's first steam battleship. Fulton |
