Treasury of Atreus

Treasury of Atreus
One of the most representative tholos-type tombs, located on a slope near the Acropolis of Mycenae, Greece. It was named by H. Schliemann, the excavator of the site. It is estimated to have been built around 1250 BC (or early 14th century BC). The structure has a 36m long and 6m wide passageway at the front, which leads to a huge vaulted sanctuary through a megalithic entrance. The sanctuary is 13.2m high and 14.5m in diameter, and is a honeycomb vault made of piled cut stones. There is an attached small burial chamber at the back right. It is said that the attribution of this tomb to Atreus is incorrect, but its size and outstanding architectural structure make it undoubtedly the tomb of the most powerful member of the Mycenaean royal family.
