Sarumaru Dayu - Sarumaru Dayu

Japanese: 猿丸大夫 - さるまるだゆう

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A legendary poet of the Heian period. The only reliable record is in the preface to the Kokinshu, which reads, "Otomo Kuronushi's poems are next to those of the ancient Sarumaru Dayu." Later, he was selected as one of the Thirty-six Immortal Poets by Fujiwara no Kinto, and he has a family anthology, Sarumaru Dayu Shu, but it is made up of poems from the Manyoshu and poems from the Kokinshu whose readers are unknown, and it is unclear whether he composed them himself. He has been turned into a legend in various ways, and Kamo no Chomei visited a place near Tagami in Omi Province (Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture) that is said to be his grave (Hojoki). His name does not appear at all in the imperial anthologies. In folklore, it refers to a person who traveled around the country in dedication to Ono-no-kami, the guardian deity of the Ono clan, and was involved in the tradition of waka poetry, and is not the name of a specific individual. <References> Yanagita Kunio, "Stories about Helping God" (Yanagita Kunio Collection, Volume 12)

生年：生没年不詳
平安時代の伝説的歌人。『古今集』真名序に,「大友黒主の歌は古の猿丸大夫の次なり」とあるのが唯一確かな記載。そののち藤原公任によって三十六歌仙のひとりに選ばれ,また家集『猿丸大夫集』があるが,それは『万葉集』の歌と『古今集』読み人知らずの歌から成るもので,本人の作かどうかは明らかでない。さまざまに伝説化され,鴨長明は近江国田上(滋賀県大津市)付近にその墓と称する場所を訪れている(『方丈記』)。勅撰集にはその名は全く現れない。民俗学では,小野氏の氏神である小野神を奉じて各地を巡遊し,和歌の伝承にかかわった者を指し,特定個人の名ではないとしている。<参考文献>柳田国男『神を助けた話』(『柳田国男集』12巻)
