Melissos (English spelling)

Melissos (English spelling)
Born around 480 BC in Samos
[Died around 400 BC] Ancient Greek philosopher. A disciple of Parmenides, he was the last important figure in the Eleatic school. He was also a naval commander, and commanded the Samos fleet during the Athenian revolt of 441-440 BC. His main philosophical activity was the defense of Parmenides' philosophy, which established eternal and unchanging true existence in contrast to the apparent world, and he did not develop his own ideas much. While Zeno, a senior member of the Eleatic school, defended Parmenides while criticizing those who accepted the so-called material existence and the world's coming into being and changing, Melissus attempted to prove it using the same reasoning as his teacher. That is, since nothing comes from nothing, existence is eternal, infinite, and one without beginning or end. Therefore, emptiness cannot exist because it is non-existent, and movement is impossible.
