A police dog that originated in the UK. The name of this breed is said to have two meanings: a dog that can smell the blood of animals, and a dog that can convey the pure blood of this breed without mixing it with the blood of other breeds. Regardless of the meaning, it is said that no other dog breed today has a better sense of smell than this breed. Although they have a very kind, gentle, and calm personality, their outstanding sense of smell is incredibly effective in tracking the footprints of criminals and fugitives, identifying the source of bloodstains, and searching for lost children, and many stories have been told since ancient times.

原産地がイギリスの警察犬。この犬種名には，動物の血液のにおいをかぎわけるイヌ，他の犬種の血液を混じえずこの犬種の血液を純粋に伝えるイヌ，という二つの意義があるといわれる。意義は別として，現在のあらゆる犬種のうち，この犬種に優る嗅覚能をもつイヌはないといわれる。性格はひじょうに優しく穏和で，おっとりしているが，抜群の嗅覚能は犯罪者や逃亡者の足跡追及，血痕の主の識別，迷子の捜索などに驚異的な威力を発揮し，古くから幾多のエピソードが伝えられている。
