…In China, Korea, and other countries, mourning clothes are called sofuku because they are worn in the event of a misfortune in life, and they are called sofuku because they are made of unprocessed fabric such as hemp or white cloth. In Japan, the Nihon Shoki and other works use the character sofuku and call it asa no miso, but according to the Wamyōshō, mourning clothes in ancient Japan were called fujigoromo. The word fujigoromo probably comes from the fact that mourning clothes were made of unprocessed fabric woven from wisteria and other fibers. …
