A semi-cone-shaped formation formed when weathered debris falls down a steep slope under the force of gravity and accumulates at the bottom. It forms at the bottom of a steep cliff, with fine sand deposited at the top and larger debris deposited at the bottom. The angle of inclination of the surface is ultimately determined by the debris stability angle. The larger the grain size of the angular debris, the greater the angle of inclination, but generally the inclination is 25 to 40 degrees. It often forms at the base of steep slopes in arid regions, or under cliffs of roads and other cuts. Numerous talus cones have developed on the steep slopes of the bald mountains around the former Ashio Copper Mine in Tochigi Prefecture.
