Japanese: フリードリヒ・ウィルヘルム(英語表記)Friedrich Wilhelm
Friedrich Wilhelm
1620‐88
Elector of Brandenburg from the House of Hohenzollern. Reigned from 1640 to 1688. Known as the "Great Elector" for his achievements. Through skillful diplomacy, he liberated the Duchy of Prussia from Polish sovereignty, and especially in terms of domestic politics, he suppressed the power of privileged nobles and autonomous cities, introduced a standing army and a tax system, and established the foundations of a centralized bureaucratic administrative system. In this respect, he is considered a pioneer of Prussian absolutism. [Osamu Naruse]
