The advantage of triangular or multilateral trade is that settlement is made between multiple countries, so even if country A has an export surplus of $10 million to country B, if country B has an export surplus of the same amount to country C and country C has an export surplus of the same amount to country A, the overall balance is achieved, and the trade volume expands compared to bilateral trade. Famous examples of triangular trade in economic history are the trade between Britain, Western Europe, and the Baltic countries in the 18th century, and the trade between Britain, West Africa, and the West Indies.
