A village in Iwate County, located in the center of Iwate Prefecture, bordering Morioka City. Population 44,189 (1995). From the north to the center, it is made up of the foothills of Mt. Iwate (2,041m) and the hills that extend from it, with the Kitakami River flowing south along the eastern border. The Tohoku Expressway runs through the east, the Tohoku Main Line runs along the Kitakami River, and the JR Tazawako Line runs along the Shizukuishi River on the southern border. The main industry is agriculture, mainly livestock and rice farming. It is the center of intensive dairy farming in the prefecture, and various national and prefectural agricultural and forestry testing institutes are concentrated here. Because it is adjacent to Morioka City, the population increased by 16% between 1990 and 1995, and residential development is remarkable in the southern part of the town. 岩手県中央部,盛岡市に接する岩手郡の村。人口4万4189(1995)。北部から中部にかけては岩手山(2041m)山麓およびそれからのびる丘陵地からなり,東境を北上川が南流する。東寄りを東北自動車道が縦断し,北上川沿いを東北本線,南境の雫石(しずくいし)川沿いをJR田沢湖線が走る。主産業は農業で,畜産,米作が中心。集約酪農の県内の中心地で,国や県の各種農林試験機関が集中する。盛岡市に隣接するため1990‐95年の間に16%の人口増加があり,南部での住宅地化が著しい。
