Friedrich Wilhelm I

Friedrich Wilhelm I
1688‐1740
King of Prussia. Reigned 1713-40. Father of Frederick II (the Great), nicknamed the "Soldier King." He cut down on unnecessary expenditures at court, unified the royal estate finances and tax collection system, and established a central Superintendentate Office and military and royal estate finance offices in each state, completing an absolutist system of governance under personal rule by the king. Based on this strict and rational finance, he more than doubled the strength of the standing army, building the foundation for elevating Prussia to the status of a great power. [Naruse Osamu]
