1876‐1971 A female writer born to a Huguenot aristocratic refugee from France. Raised in a devout family, she studied theology, philosophy, and history in Heidelberg and Berlin, but converted to Catholicism at the age of 50 after receiving guidance from her mentor, the religious philosopher Troeltsch, and publishing her collection of poems, Hymns to the Church (1924), which praised the glory of the medieval church. Her autobiographical novel, The Shroud of Veronica (1928), depicts this religious experience, and caused a sensation in Catholic circles at the time as a book of warning against modern times that have lost God.
