Bacolod (English spelling)

A city on the west coast of Negros Island in the western Visayas, Philippines. It is the capital of the province of Negros Occidental. It became the commercial center of the sugarcane-growing region around 1800, collecting raw sugar and shipping it to Iloilo on the opposite island of Panay. Since the 1920s, the city has developed rapidly with the dramatic increase in sugarcane cultivation. The outer port of Pulupandan was built to the southwest. In the city, the sugarcane plantation offices of the province, sugar factory offices, the headquarters of the plantation owners' association, a sugar exchange, an agricultural machinery sales company, a fertilizer store, insurance companies, and transportation companies are lined up, and the plantation owners' grand mansions spread out in the suburbs. There is a domestic airport. Population: 364,000 (1990 estimate).
