This is a new research field that integrates geological research and archaeological data on the traces of past earthquakes, such as the deformation of ruins, faults, liquefaction, and landslides. It is expected that research on earthquake traces, which occur quite periodically along active faults, will be useful for earthquake prediction, as well as for determining the age of ruins, solving the mystery of disappearance of settlements, and lake-bottom ruins. 遺跡の変形，断層跡，液状化跡，地すべり跡など過去の地震跡の地質学的研究と考古学的資料とを統一的にとらえる新しい研究分野。遺跡の年代決定や集落の消滅，湖底遺跡の謎の解明などの環境復元に役立つほか，活断層に沿ってかなり周期的に起きている地震跡の研究などは，地震予知にも役立つものと期待されている。また大地震にともなって起きた大津波についても研究されており，2011年３月の福島第一原発事故について，事故後，869年（貞観11年）の三陸地方に大きな被害をもたらしたと推定される貞観津波(じょうがんつなみ )の調査がすでに80年代から東北大学箕浦幸治教授らによって発表され，さらに数値シミュレーションの研究も産業技術研究所の行谷佑一らによって提出されていたことが広く知られるようになった。しかし，こうした研究者たちによる警鐘は事前の対策には一部を除いて活かされることはなく，改めて国および電力会社の無責任な対応が問われている。
