The Otate Rebellion

Japanese:
The Otate Rebellion
After the death of Uesugi Kenshin in 1578, Kenshin's adopted son Uesugi Kagekatsu (from the Ueda Nagao clan) and Uesugi Kagetora (son of Hojo Ujiyasu, lord of Odawara Castle in Sagami) fought over his succession. The war ended in 1580. Immediately after Kenshin's death, Kagekatsu entered the main citadel of Kasugayama Castle in Echigo (present-day Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture), while Kagetora, who was in the second citadel, moved to Otate (the residence of former Kanto Kanrei Uesugi Norimasa) and confronted him. At first, Kagetora, who was supported by many of Kenshin's hatamoto, had the upper hand. However, at the request of Hojo Ujimasa (Kagetora's older brother), Takeda Katsuyori of Kai, who sent troops to rescue Kagetora, made peace with Kagekatsu, and Kagekatsu gradually established military superiority thereafter. In 1579, Uesugi Norimasa, who attempted to mediate, was killed by Kagekatsu's soldiers, and Kagetora also tried to escape to Odawara, but failed and committed suicide. The local lords on Kagetora's side continued to resist, but were subdued in 1580. Following his victory, Kagekatsu reorganized his vassals, centering on the Ueda clan, and established a foundation for governing his domain.
