This is an artificial lake in the southeast of Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture. Meiji Village is located on the shore of the lake. It has a circumference of 16 km and an area of 1.66 square km. Construction began in 1632 (Kan'ei 9) and was completed in 1633 as an irrigation pond. It was created by the Iruka Six, including Ezaki Zenzaemon, with permission from Tokugawa Yoshinao, the lord of Owari Domain. The pond was created by damming up the narrow valley of the Imai, Koki, and Oku-Iruka rivers, which had become large rivers here and flowed from Choshiguchi to Kuragafuchi and into the Haguro River. Iruka Village (160 farmhouses) was submerged at the bottom of the pond. Even now, it provides irrigation water to irrigate the fields of Inuyama City, Komaki City, and Niwa County. Additionally, nearby are Owari Fuji (275 meters) and Mt. Hongu (293 meters), both made up of the Chichibu Mesozoic and Paleozoic formations. The area is a tourist destination of nature and history, surrounded by ponds, Meiji Village, hills and mountains, and is part of the Hida Kisogawa Quasi-National Park.
