This Umayyad fortress-style palace remains about 41km southeast of Amman, Jordan. It was built (partly unfinished) by Caliph Walid II (reigned 743-744). It has a square plan with sides of 145m, and is the second largest Umayyad palace after the Anjār Palace southwest of Baalbek. The palace is divided into three parts, east and west, and the central part is further divided into three parts, north and south, with a basilica-style three-petaled Throne Room at the very back. The outer walls (brick and stone) are reinforced with towers, but what has made this palace particularly famous is the southern façade (limestone, which shows the development of patterns from the early Islamic period.
